Largest promotion of its kind in Canadian retail jewelry history wraps

WINNIPEG, MB Dec. 14, 2010 – Ben Moss Jewellers capped its eight-week, 100th anniversary Ben Moss Jewellers $100,000 Anniversary Sweepstakes recently by presenting the $20,000 two-carat diamond solitaire ring grand prize to Winnipegger Heidi Pawluk, who coincidentally nearly four decades ago had bought her wedding bands at a Ben Moss store.

“To be able to reach in and pull out an entry from not only a long-time customer, but a long-time customer in Winnipeg – where Ben Moss was started by my grandfather 100 years ago – is an ideal way to wrap up what has been a resoundingly successful contest,” said president and CEO Brent Trepel. “We are thankful to everyone who helped us celebrate the Ben Moss Jewellers 100th anniversary and the $100,000 Anniversary Sweepstakes.”

Trepel presented Pawluk with the sparkling ring in front of staff and customers at the Polo Park Shopping Centre Friday. Pawluk beamed as she placed it on her ring finger.

“I was overwhelmed and totally surprised to be drawn as the grand prize winner,” she told Trepel. “I am very gracious of Ben Moss Jewellers to put on this contest for its 100th anniversary and also for the daily prizes.”

Prizes in jewelry and gift cards were given away in what is believed to have been the largest promotion of its kind in Canadian retail jewelry history. A major component of the contest invited entrants to share a memory or special moment involving jewelry on a dedicated Ben Moss contest site, by mail or in person at any of the company’s 63 stores. But submitting a story was not mandatory to qualify for entry for the grand prize.

“My entry was cast when I voted for a story,” Pawluk added.

In another interesting twist, Pawluk’s votes went toward the contestant who took third place and $3,000 in Ben Moss gift cards with 4,001 votes. A story about a long-distance relationship by a woman in Ontario took first place and a $7,000 one-carat diamond solitaire ring with 5,505 votes. A story by a woman who lost her Ben Moss engagement ring and is saving to replace it took second place and a $4,000 Limited Edition luxury watch with 4,133 votes.

Canada’s fastest-growing jeweller also awarded six regional prizes of $7,000 one-carat diamond solitaire rings on Dec. 8, 2010. The contest ran from Sat. Oct. 2 to Nov. 30, 2010 and in all, received more than 100,000 entries.

Ben Moss Jewellers was founded in Winnipeg in 1910. Today, the retailer remains a family-owned business and employs about 600 people in 63 stores across Canada. In 2009, the company opened seven new stores, most of them in Canada’s top-performing shopping malls. Ben Moss Jewellers also has an online store at www.benmoss.com.
