INTRODUCTION | THE RESORT | SHARING THE WHEEL | DRIVERS & CARS
The circumstances under which Mooswa Resort owners and operators Andy Watson and Val Morrison first met gave little indication they would eventually wind up running a successful business together. One evening in 2002, Val, whose family had owned Mooswa for several years by that time, was having a little trouble with a rowdy party in one of the resort’s chalets and called the Clear Lake RCMP detachment for a little assistance in dispersing the crowd. Andy, the constable on duty, showed up and helped sort out the situation.
The rest is Clear Lake history.
Val, a former schoolteacher born and raised in Winnipeg, and Andy, a still-serving Mountie originally from Nova Scotia, have spent the last five years putting their combined talents and energies into making Mooswa a place people want to be.
Now in its 44th year of operation, the Mooswa Resort is one of Clear Lake’s most popular getaway destinations. Its 43 units, comprised of six A-frames, eight motel units, seven suites, and 22 cabins are booked several months in advance and attract day trippers, couples seeking a romantic getaway, golf weekenders, and families looking for a more long-term vacation. Besides a perfect location within Clear Lake, the resort offers a pool and kiddie pool, barbecues, fire pits, satellite TV and air conditioning in each unit.
A happy accident in 2006 presented an interesting opportunity for Val and Andy. When five of their cabins on one side of Mooswa Drive suffered extensive plumbing damage, the couple opted to demolish and rebuild rather than repair. But, the rebuilt cabins weren’t exactly the same as those that had been torn down. Instead, Val and Andy built six 1,500 sq. ft. luxury units. With interiors designed by Val, the new two-storey units have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, large living areas with stone fireplaces and designer kitchens. The wrap-around decks are perfect for a morning cup of coffee, an evening glass of wine, or an any-time-of-day break to sit, relax, and enjoy nature. The couple have kept one for themselves, sold three others, and are renting out the remaining two with the intention of selling them as well. See arrowhead.ca for details.
As for the future, Val and Andy’s intention is to focus on making the resort a whole
family getaway, and to renovate an older portion of the property, which will result in a two-storey log lodge which will attract the small conference crowd.
Mooswa Resort is open from May to October. Call 1-866-848-2533 for reservations, or check them out on the web at mooswa.com.
