As a born and bred Winnipegger I know that it is easy to get into a routine of going to the same places and doing the same things. This is especially true during the winter months, when it’s just a little bit harder to push yourself out of your comfort zone (or even out of your living room). Now that the weather is warm, and the house even warmer, it’s a great time to get out and discover, or in some cases revisit, some fantastic Winnipeg places. Try a different patio, stroll around the skatepark, take in a gallery you’ve never seen or relax on the grass in a park clear across town. Trying something fresh and new is like taking a mini-break without ever leaving the city.
This issue of Winnipeg Women took our staff, writers and photographers out to some familiar places, like the University of Manitoba and Assiniboine Park. While past haunts, how many of us have taken a stroll around the campus since we donned our cap and gown, or explored the exotic plants at the Conservatory since that junior high field trip? Did you know that many buildings have gone up around the U of M campus in recent years, or that the Conservatory offers a different themed display every few months?
We also had the opportunity to try out some new places, and have since sweated at the beautiful Moksha Yoga studios on Donald Street and sipped wine at Dessert Sinsations Café behind the Winnipeg Art Gallery. While putting together this issue we also learned about planting a prairie garden (page 8), got some great advice on summer reading from Janet Stewart (page 12) and Vicki Burns (page 46), and discovered locally-owned stores selling pet accessories for our favourite pooch or feline friend (pages 18 and 20).
We hope that you enjoy this issue and that it inspires you, like it did us, to get out and experience something new in Winnipeg.
Enjoy!
