Well Read Spring 09

Deputy Chief Shelley Hart has been with the Winnipeg Police Service since 1978, holding a range of assignments from vice to robbery/homicide and was recently honoured with an Attorney General’s Excellence in Law Enforcement Award. We caup to the busy deputy chief to see if her craft is reflected on her bookshelf.

The most moving and thought-provoking novel I read recently was The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. The story begins wheught n a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own set of twins. One of the children, his daughter, has Down syndrome and he makes the decision to have his nurse take the baby to an institution, telling his wife that the baby died at birth. The nurse does not leave the baby at the institution but instead raises her as her own. The story follows the life of the two families and in doing so demonstrates the destructive power of secrets.

Right now I am reading a couple of very different books. Running Start to Finish by John Stanton is a runner’s guide. I am planning on participating in the Winnipeg Police half marathon in May and am using this book to guide my training. I received it from a friend who had picked it up at a book sale with all the important information underlined–bonus! I also have an autobiography on the go, Meat Loaf: to Hell and Back.
Over the Christmas holidays I read a couple of suspense novels by an author I had never previously read, Tami Hoag. I had picked up a number of her books at a used book sale and dove into a couple of older stories, Guilty as Sin and Prior Bad Acts. Both were hard to put down.
Up next are two novels by Khaled Hosseini which I received for Christmas, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.
