Dear Winnipeg Women,
I moved from Winnipeg where I grew up to Regina a few years ago. My father still lives in Winnipeg and I visit him monthly. He saved your September/October 2008 issue of Winnipeg Women for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the articles and the advertisements. It’s nice to see what new shops have appeared on the Winnipeg scene. I have dog-eared many of the pages to remind myself where to shop and visit on my next trip.
I am writing this letter to applaud the article by Stephanie Staples. This is one of the best articles I have read in ages. She has hit the nail on the head in her description of integrity. I think her article should be read at every high school graduation and college convocation. It is a great reminder to young and old alike on the value of a life lead by integrity.
Thank you for reminding me.

Dear Winnipeg Women,
As someone who works in the field of domestic violence counselling and crisis work, I want you to know how encouraging it is to see a magazine promoting two great agencies who have such a strong passion for feminist issues, like Mount Carmel Clinic and Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre. Thanks for bringing to those who live in Winnipeg, but are not in the social service fields, a good description of what services are offered and what issues are still affecting women today within Winnipeg. I love your magazine, love your makeup and beauty product features and am thrilled when that is combined with a human-focused view of life as well. You are doing good work, carry on and be blessed!

Dear Winnipeg Women,
I was very moved by last issue’s article: P.S. You’re Beautiful by Stephanie Staples. Beauty does come from within, how you feel on the inside about yourself is reflected on the outside. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and cultures and is buried deep within your soul. As women we need to work harder at finding our own inner beauty and releasing it to the world. It is NOT something you buy. As an eating disorder and mental health services advocate for over 17 years, I have met many young women who strive for this elusive perfection perpetrated by the very powerful diet, merchandising and advertising industries. I am also the mother of a wonderful, caring and beautiful person who lost her life to anorexia at only 24 years of age. Alyssa always felt that she never “measured up.” What we need to realize is that perfection doesn’t exist, it is conjured up in so many ways, like air brushing and photo manipulation and constant messaging everywhere that there is something wrong with us all and we better fix it! I long for the day, when we really can be accepted for who we are as individuals and not by the way we look!
