Wondering what to do with the kids during summer break? Here are several places that offer day camps and other activities for the young ones.

 

4-ass-parkAssiniboine Park and Zoo

Summer Camps
• For children aged 5 to 13 (children entering grades 1 through 7)
• Week of July 3rd to week of August 31st, 2012
• Park and Zoo Members: $150 +GST Non Members: $165 +GST

Arts in Our Nature Camp
• July and August
• For children ages 10 to 14
• Subsidies available for participation

LIFE - Intergenerational Day Programs
• Thursdays July 12th to August 23rd
• For children aged 8 to 12
• subsidies available for participation

For the more adventurous, Assiniboine Park also offers sleepovers where children (accompanied by an adult) can experience nature at night, learn about protecting their environment and listen to some amazing stories. Sleepovers include trekking through speciἀed areas of the Park, making a craft to take home, and an evening and morning snack. All sleepovers run on Friday nights unless otherwise arranged at the Qualico Family Centre’s Acorn Activity Room. Cost is $40 per child, and $30 for adults and individuals over 18. One adult is required for every six campers.

2-ft-wytFort Whyte

FortWhyte Alive is a unique summer camp setting, offering campers a wilderness experience, within city limits. All camp programs take full advantage of our extensive facilities, including: 640 acres of forests, lakes and wetlands with a large network of trails, and Ḁoating boardwalks, giving campers a chance to get close to the wide variety wildlife that call ForyWhyte home. 3-mtypManitoba Theatre for Young People

Tantalizing summer theatre and ἀlm camps for actors ages 5 to 19. For nine weeks this summer, we’ll come together every day to learn theatre skills, act, sing and dance, write songs, build puppets, make movies, and rehearse play to perform fo an audience every Friday. Each week a new batch of plays are cooked up; each week you’ll have a chance to take centre stage and show off the theatre skills you’ve learned. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Student drop-off begins at 8:30 a.m. and pick-up goes until 5 p.m. To register for camps visit: www.mtyp.ca or call 947-0394 ext. 230

 

WAG offers Artful Writing

Back by popular demand, the Winnipeg Art Gallery presents Write to Art: Creative Writing Workshop led by local literary greats Marjorie Anderson and Deborah Schnitzer. Through new and expanded writing exercises, the workshop focuses on the links between the visual and literary arts, and this year’s theme relates to the exhibition American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell.

Write to Art runs three consecutive Saturdays, April 21, 28 and May 5 from 1 - 4 p.m. Tickets are $75 for WAG members, $90 for non-members. Call 789-0516 to register.
