Mix & Match

Looking to add a dash of spring to your tired winter wardrobe? Connie Hall from Peppertree Fashions shows us how to make the most of your basic pieces through flattering jackets and interesting accessories.

TO START
Want to update your wardrobe but don’t know where to begin? Connie suggests taking a good look at what’s in your closet, so the sales team can work with what you already own and feel comfortable in. For instance, Joan’s black pants and spice-coloured cowl neck top, seen here, are great on their own. But adding a light coat and colourful pashmina scarf not only transform these basic pieces, but are versatile and can be worn with jeans and a variety of coloured tops. You can rejuvenate your wardrobe without spending a ton of money, says Connie. Buying a few key pieces, and some great accessories is less expensive – and more versatile – than buying one entire new outfit.

SHOULDER PADS
For many of us, shoulder pads went out in the ’80s, but Connie insists that they work wonders for women, whose once square shoulders often start to round once they reach their 30s. The difference in this jacket, to which shoulder pads were added, is enormous, creating entirely different lines and allowing the jacket to hang properly. They also take about 10 years off most women, she says. They shouldn’t extend your natural shoulders, explains Connie, just square them off.

NECKLACES AND NECKLINES
Necklaces are huge this season, says Connie, who loves them because they draw the eye up to the face, and away from problem areas. One great tip is that the jewelry around the face shouldn’t echo the shape of your face. So if you have a
round face, you might want to try long earrings to accentuate your cheekbones. Women who wear glasses should also consider the metal of their glasses when choosing jewelry, noticing what complements and what doesn’t. If you want to elongate your neckline, a great necklace paired with a V-neck top is great. Women who find that their collarbones protrude, may find square necks to be more flattering. Round necklines are the cheapest to manufacture, says Connie, and so are the most readily available, but she suggests trying out a few different styles – like a cowl – to see what looks good on you.

EMBRACE COLOUR
At this time of year, a lot of women are looking for ways to add some colour to their wardrobes. Connie suggests that die-hard black fans start slow, by incorporating colour through smaller pieces like scarves, patterned jackets and jewelry. Darker,
more neutral colours are always going to be more versatile, she says, but colourful pieces can add that extra something to an outfit that makes you feel fantastic.
