Bone Density Screening
Written by Andrea Danelak
Thanks to the Bone Density Screening Centre (BDSC) of Winnipeg, you can easily find out if you're at risk for osteoporotic fractures. This is especially important given that osteoporosis usually progresses without any symptoms and that those with the disease are six times more likely to fracture their bones than those with normal bone density.
The BDSC, Manitoba's first private bone density screening centre, can help you decrease your risk of fractures (before you break any bones!) by measuring the bone density in your fingers. How? It uses a digital x-ray scanner (with an extremely low dose x-ray) to calculate your bone density, the results of which are provided to you immediately. The centre compares your bone density to that of a healthy adult woman between the ages of 20-29 years old, as well as to that of people of your own age and ethnicity. Another plus? The procedure is completely non-invasive and painless, and takes only a few minutes of your time.
For more information, visit the BDSC of Winnipeg at 5-3421 Portage Ave, or call 889-7226. And ladies, keep in mind that 12 per cent of men over 50 also have thinning bones so take your partner along too.
