Retro Holiday Fun
There’s a way for you to have fun with retro holiday decor and not have to do it in your own home. The Manitoba Electrical Museum and Education Centre is running an exhibit through to January which will have you thinking back to being a kid around Christmastime. The exhibit looks at holiday decorating trends over the years and would be a warm and fuzzy way to spend an afternoon as the holidays approach. 680 Harrow St., 477-7905.
New Director
William and Shirley Loewen were announced as the new directors emeritus of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 27. The positions honour those who have long been involved with the WSO at “extraordinary” levels. The Loewens have been active in committees and on the board and have provided leadership, expertise, direction and financial support to the organization for over 20 years.
Ladies’ Night
On Saturday October 18, Studio Publications sponsored the Mantioba Moose game versus the Rochester Americans. Seventy five ladies, including last issue’s contest winner Linda Scott and two guests, dressed in pink to help us support the Manitoba Moose and CancerCare’s Breast Cancer Centre of Hope. All the ladies enjoyed a pre-game reception with pink martinis, wine, appetizers and a few door prizes at the Blaze Restaurant at the Delta hotel. A fun evening was had by all!
New Jewels
New to Lola Boutique at 2090 Corydon Ave, is jewellery by local designer Michelle Lischinsky. Michelle is a graduate of the Jewellery Arts program at George Brown College in Toronto. Before jewellery became her passion, she was an Olympian, competing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics as a member of Canada’s National Swim Team!

Self Employment 101
On Thursday, Dec. 4, The Women’s Enterprise Centre is hosting a free seminar for prospective entrepreneurs to help put your dreams into action. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. attendees will be educated on the advantages and challenges of being self-employed, and help you to determine if you have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. The seminar will also answer many FAQs on starting a business. For more information call 988-1860.
The Gold Standard
All Canadian Renovations has been on a winning streak. At the Manitoba Home Builders Renovation Awards Dinner, they have won gold in the kitchens category for five years in a row, in lower level developments for three years in a row, and in exterior finishing for two years in a row. They can now add to the list after winning gold in the bathrooms category. Congratulations!

The Manitoba Women Entrepreneur of the Year Awards is accepting nominations for the 2009 awards. Put on by the Manitoba Women Business Owners, the awards recognize today’s successful women entrepreneurs who stand as role models for tomorrow’s business leaders. Festival of Trees and Lights
Running from Nov. 21 to Dec. 7, this annual event at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory is a showcase of light displays and holiday decorations, including decorated trees, which are later raffled off with proceeds going to the year’s charity of choice. A craft sale weekend and also a family day take place during the run of the event.
Memory Tree
Every year Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba invites people to write a message on a card and hang it on the Memory Tree, in memory of a loved one. The tree will be located at St. Vital Shopping Centre from Nov. 25 to Dec. 29 and donations are welcome with proceeds going to the organization.
Canadian Pacific Holiday Train
This brightly lit train travels North America to raise food, money and awareness for local food banks. The train will be stopping in Winnipeg at Union Station on the afternoon of Dec. 7. Apart from the colourful display, the afternoon features a concert by pop act Melanie Doane and Canadian rockers, Wide Mouth Mason. Donations of money or food will be accepted on site.
The Prairie Dog Central Railway Santa Trains
Hop on board for either a Breakfast with Santa Train, with meals in Grosse Isle or Warren, or a Santa Evening Train, where the train is decked out with holiday lights. Outdoor activities take place at the train’s stops and donations of non-perishable food or an unwrapped toy are welcome. Trains are scheduled for Nov. 29 and 30 and also Dec. 6 and 7. Marche de Noel / Christmas Market
This outdoor Christmas Market is being held in honour of the 100th anniversary of the St. Boniface Cathedral. Running from Dec. 5 to 7, there will be 20 cabins lining Provencher Boulevard. Each cabin will house different artisans and historical interpreters will be sharing stories over warm fires along the street.
CanadInns Winter Wonderland
This huge, drive-through, holiday light display at the Red River Exhibition Park runs from Nov. 28 to Jan. 4. It can be enjoyed from the comfort of your vehicle but you can also go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride or for a skate on the ice rink. There are 29 different theme areas along the 2.5 km drive.
Christmas Light Runs & Christmas At The Taylors
Climb aboard the Assiniboine Valley Railroad’s miniature train to take in holiday light displays or view the displays by walking the natural bush trails where you may also see some wildlife. Located at 3001 Roblin Boulevard, the display runs evenings Dec. 6 to Jan. 4.
Christmas Lights Sightseeing Tour – Heartland Travel
This Dec. 17, a three-hour tour will take you to the most spectacular light displays in Winnipeg. With Christmas carols playing in the background, the tour covers residences and businesses and some of the biggest light displays in the city, including the Manitoba Legislature’s holiday lights.
