A signature by Canadian musician and poet Leonard Cohen proved to be the hot item at this year’s Empty Bowls Celebrity Auction on November 10. The signature, painted on a simple green bowl, was part of the annual fundraiser for Winnipeg Harvest. Celebrities from Celine Dion to Martha Stewart each decorated identical ceramic bowls, which were auctioned off to the tune of $235,000.
Cohen’s simple bowl won the highest bid of $2,500, while those of Canadian celebrity chef Michael Smith and Elton John tied for second place with winning bids of $2,100. Winnipeg-based artist Jordan Van Sewell opted to construct and decorate his own unique design, which fetched $1,800. Van Sewell’s trophy-esque bowl tied with that from Muhammed and Lonnie Ali for the evening’s third highest bid.
