Crafty Christmas

crafty-christmasA holiday favourite for 150 years, the Christmas cracker is at once a table decoration, conversation starter and cute gift. Most store-bought varieties are filled with the ubiquitous paper hat, silly joke and a variety of cheap toys and stickers. This year, why not create personalized crackers that will surprise and delight your guests?

This project is relatively simple to do, and takes less than an hour. For each cracker you will need:
1 10x10-inch square of wrapping paper
1 toilet paper roll
2 10x1.5-inch strips of card stock
2 pieces of ribbon
1 snap (we found ours at Michael’s – 12 for $1.99)
A glue stick
A piece of clear tape
Treats to fill the cracker

To make the cracker, centre the toilet paper roll at the edge of the wrapping paper, and reinforce with glue. Roll up and glue closed. Roll up card stock and slip into each end of roll. Slide snap through opening and tape to card stock on one side to hold in place. Tie one end closed with ribbon between toilet paper roll and card stock roll, being careful not to tear the paper. Fill the roll with treats from the opposite end before tying that end closed with ribbon.

Suggested treats:
•    For adults try small packages of freshly ground holiday blend coffee or
chocolate-covered coffee beans from Black Pearl Coffee or sample-size
bottles of lotion from Tiber River Naturals.
•    For kids try crayons, hair clips, lip gloss, fake tattoos or candy.
