Editor's Perspective
dukeYes, that’s me in my Brownie uniform (and mushroom cut) in the ‘80s. And, yes, those are my badges. News that Girl Guides of Canada was celebrating a milestone anniversary this year prompted many a lively discussion on cookies, camps and the coveted (or despised) uniform and a show-and-tell of memorabilia and photos at our editorial meetings. We thought you’d relate to our enthusiasm. Read about the role Girl Guides is playing for young women today in our Community feature, and share your memories with us at www.winnipegwomen.net. While things have certainly changed since any of us were involved (there’s an Information Technology badge?) the values seem to remain the same: to be respectful, resourceful
and helpful.

One thing Brownies instilled in me was to be prepared. Perhaps that’s why each year I attempt to have most of my holiday shopping done in November. After all, you never know what interesting invitation or unannounced guest could pop up at the last minute, delaying shopping trips. Though this year it has been harder than usual to get into the spirit of things, with the snow yet to fly, we worked our magic to help you check off your shopping list with ideas from our gift guide. Check it out on page 65.

You’ll also want to read about our local athletic heroes in our Manitoban Olympic hopefuls feature. We have such a strong group of women who may represent us at the Games in Vancouver and we can't wait to cheer them on.

Another local hero is Ruth Kettner, a pioneer of Child Life in children’s hospitals. A modest woman, she will likely be embarrassed to have us call her ‘hero’, but we think she definitely qualifies. Read her profile on page 54. Do you know someone who has made a real difference in our community? Email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to share their story.

And don’t forget to nominate a relative, friend or co-worker for our fifth annual Winnipeg’s Most Beautiful Women contest, which closes January 7, 2010. Visit www.winnipegwomen.net for more information and
to enter.

Here’s to a bright 2010!
