Fall Reads: Books to Curl Up With
Written by Admin
If you’re curious about what’s been gracing the palms and coffee tables of other Winnipegger’s this fall, here’s a look at some local bestsellers:
Waiting for Elvis by David Elias —This paperback fiction follows the meeting of two nearly hopeless souls, brought up in separate yet similar world’s of alcoholism and pain, leading them to live emotionally stunted lives. Betty, a 40-something running a roadside diner, and Sal, a wanderer and hermit living in the woods near the diner, are brought together and finally wake up to the emotions they long left behind.
The Flying Troutmans by Miriam Toews — This new hardcover from celebrated Winnipeg author, Miriam Toews, has the reader as a passenger in a bizarre road trip with a makeshift family. After being dumped by her boyfriend in Paris, Hattie has to come home to Winnipeg to care for her niece and nephew because their mom (Hattie’s sister) has been checked into a psychiatric hospital. Hattie and the two kids (ages 11 and 14) set out on a road trip in a sort of misguided attempt to find the kids’ father. During the journey the reader learns about the history that has set them on this path.
In Search of April Raintree 25th Anniversary Editionby Beatrice Mosinoier — This classic book by Winnipeg author, Beatrice Mosionier, has been reprinted to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In Search of April Raintree tells the tale of two sisters who are separated and put into foster care. While they maintain a bond, despite being raised separately, one embraces their Metis heritage while the other would tries to leave it behind. A tragic ending also ends up bringing a much-needed realization.
